Congratulations indeed. In your case, honors are to be expected but glad to see the school concurred. :)

Congratulations! What a great feeling.

I hope to be getting one of those BA (Hons) Literature (Open) things in about 2012 after what will have been 6 years study with the Open University.

Congrats! Is there some special significance to the fur-lined hood? That's the first time I've ever seen that.

It means that I have a bachelor's degree in "Arts, Letters, or Humanities" -- that's why the trim is white. Different colours signify different areas for taking degrees; the commerce students who graduated with us, for example, had hoods trimmed with a sort of peach colour.

Here is a basic guide to academic regalia.

Hmm. I graduated from a College of Arts and Sciences, and had a white tassel on my cap; I'd just never seen fur trim before. Neat!

What is it about grad gowns that says 'You are now an adult with a degree! Please flip up your hood and become a fictional soul-sucker immediately.' It's like it can't be helped.

I think it's because when else do we get a chance to run around in Potterish robes? If we were all Oxfordians it would be run-of-the-mill, but alas, we are not all Oxfordians, more's the pity.
